The Missoma T-Bar

Maison Bertaux, London's Oldest Patisserie
Maison Bertaux first opened its doors in 1871, when a Communard fleeing Paris arrived on Greek Street with nothing but a book of recipes. More than 150 years later, it's still on the same site and still run with the same spirit that has made it a neighbourhood fixture ever since.
The patisserie passed from its founder to the Vignaud family, who ran it until 1988. That year, Michele Wade bought the business outright from Madame Vignaud. Michele had first walked through the door decades earlier as a teenage Saturday girl, working under Monsieur Vignaud's son while training in Dramatic Arts. Everything is still handmade daily in the two kitchens upstairs, though fresh fruit has long since replaced the tinned fruit of Michele's early days.
Instead of the back coming off, it's the front that detaches. You slide the post through your piercing from behind, then screw or push the front into place.

Upstairs, Michele's sister Tania runs the gallery. RADA-trained Tania first turned the tearoom into an informal exhibition space in the 2000s and has since shown work by Grayson Perry and Pierre et Gilles. She also gave Noel Fielding his first-ever exhibition, letting him paint directly onto the gallery walls, and he returned the favour by nicknaming her the "Hooligan Art Dealer."
The guestlist over the decades has been suitably eclectic, from Virginia Woolf and Karl Marx to John Gielgud and Derek Jarman. Alexander McQueen celebrated his 25th birthday here in 1994, while Lily Allen had her wedding cake made in the kitchens upstairs.
The History of the T-bar

The T-bar gets its name from exactly what it is: a small horizontal bar that slots through a loop to hold a piece in place. It started life as pure hardware, lifted from Victorian pocket watch chains and fob fastenings. Today, that functional detail has become the main event.
T-bars are the finishing touch that goes with everything, classic and contemporary at once. They're your ultimate plus one.
